Canada may have to answer for its role in Libya

Canada may have to answer for its role in Libya

By SCOTT TAYLOR

Then Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird responds to a question during Question Period in the House of Commons on Parliament Hill in Ottawa in 2012. Baird was one of Canada’s fiercest supporters of regime change in Libya, change which Scott Taylor argues ultimately led to the chaotic state of the nation today. (Sean Kilpatrick/CP)

It has been six years since the NATO-supported Libyan uprising murdered President Moammar Gadhafi and toppled his regime. Canada was proud of the fact that the big boys — namely the U.K., U.S. and France — had let us appear to be leading the charge against Libya.

Canada’s then-foreign minister John Baird was the loudest among the chorus of NATO voices bellowing for regime change, Lt.-Gen. Charles Bouchard was publicly named the allied force commander, our CF-18 fighter jets were among the first in operation in the skies above Libya, and the RCN frigate HMCS Charlottetown plied the Mediterranean coastline to enforce the UN arms embargo.

While it was never admitted at the time, the fact that members of the Canadian Special Operations Regiment marched in the Nov. 24, 2011 victory parade on Parliament Hill would appear to confirm that we also had special forces boots on the ground during that conflict.

In addition to that parade, complete with a ceremonial flypast of fighter jets and helicopters, Canada also fast-tracked the Order of Canada process to bestow this honour on Lt.-Gen. Bouchard in recognition of his glorious victory in the desert.

That is an awful lot of glory for such a one-sided martial contest, which pitted the world’s most capable military alliance against a fourth-rate developing-world African security force. It was also a very premature exercise in self-congratulation.

It quickly became evident that what NATO achieved was not regime change. In the absence of a replacement administration, we plunged Libya into a state of violent anarchy.

The disparate militias that had fought together against Gadhafi loyalists refused to disarm and they immediately began fighting among each other.

A British parliamentary report into the Libya intervention was tabled last September and it was a scathing indictment of U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron. The report concluded that the collective intervention of the U.K., France and the U.S. (no mention of Canada) resulted in Libya’s “political and economic collapse, inter-militia and inter-tribal warfare, humanitarian and migrant crises, widespread human rights violations, the spread of Gadhafi regime weapons across the region and the growth of ISIL (Islamic State) in North Africa.”

Former U.S. president Barack Obama summed it up much more succinctly when he described the 2011 Libyan intervention as a “shitshow” and called it the low point in his foreign affairs legacy.

To be fair to Obama, Libya was then-secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s personal pet project. Anyone doubting this need only watch the famous video clip of Clinton during her Oct. 20, 2011 CBS television interview. At one point during the taping the secretary of state learns that Gadhafi has just been murdered in the street by a rebel mob. She throws her head back, laughs and says triumphantly, “We came, we saw . . . he died,” followed by more unrestrained laughter. Laughing at news of a murder — any murder — is clinically sociopathic. But I digress.

Although Libya is not in the news much these days, there have been some significant developments in that war-ravaged country of late, not the least of which is the release of Saif al-Islam Gadhafi from captivity last June.

Gadhafi’s second-oldest son had been held prisoner by a militia group in the city of Zintan since his capture in the waning days of the civil war. Saif had always been seen as the heir to his father’s throne. Those familiar with the Libyan uprising of 2011 know that it was primarily an inter-tribal affair, aided and abetted by Islamic extremists and the might of NATO.

The six years of subsequent anarchy have left Libya a failed state, with a citizenry longing for stability. For this reason alone, Saif has already become a political force on the embattled Libyan landscape.

Last week he announced his intention to run in next year’s presidential election. With the backing of the Warfalla and Qadhadhfa tribes — Libya’s two most powerful tribes — and former loyalists of his father flocking to his banner, Saif has a strong shot at winning at the ballot box.

If that scenario does evolve, Canada will have to do some serious soul-searching into our own allegedly lead role in that disastrous 2011 intervention. It is never too late for us to follow Britain’s lead in conducting an extensive parliamentary review into how we could have gotten it so wrong in Libya. So wrong that it looks like Gadhafi’s son will get the last laugh.

Statement of the Council of the Great Werfalla Tribe of Bani Walid

Statement of the Council of the Great Werfalla Tribe of Bani Walid

by JoanneM

As the official spoke person for the Great Tribes of Libya, I am proud the confirm the following:

Yesterday the council of the Werfalla tribe met and issued a formal statement:

” The Great Werfalla tribe claims allegiance to no government in Libya at this time. The Great Werfalla Tribe recognizes that the country of Libya is currently under military control and there will be no government until there is a government that is inclusive of all the Libyan people.”

The largest tribe in Libya is the Great Werfalla tribe. The Werfalla Tribe makes it’s home in the city of Bani Walid southeast of Tripoli.

It should be noted that the Werfalla tribe has never been under the rule of the NATO rats nor has it ever been under the control of the radical Islamic mercenaries (foreigners) illegally occupying Libya. That list includes, Libya Dawn militias, Ansar Al Sharia, Muslim Brotherhood, Al Qaeda, the corrupt mafia called the GNC (General National Congress), ISIS or any other invader of their country.

The Werfalla tribe like 96% of all Libyans are against radical Islamists, they have never allowed these psychopaths into their beautiful valley. The city of Bani Walid sits in a deep valley and is protected by a group of mountains. Even in 2012, when the criminals from Misurata came and attacked their city with illegal weapons and gas, they did not surrender.

God bless the Great Werfalla tribe and I thank them for making clear the real situation of Libya for all Libyans and the world.

The Libyan army and the military council of the Libyan tribes is underway cleaning their country as I write this. The country of Libya does not need or want the UN or the US interfering in their country. It was the US and the UN who brought this tragedy to Libya, they would never trust them to negotiate or help bring peace, they are the enemies of their beloved country.

Secret Meeting in Algiers

Secret Meeting in Algiers

by:Bakhtiar Usmonov

NEO: On December 4, 2014 Maghreb Confidential, a newspaper published in Paris and focusing on reviewing political and economic events in the North Africa, reported on a secret meeting in Algiers between two iconic Libyan leaders. These are Ali Sallabi, a theologist known for his clerical views, presently the spiritual father of the Al-Fajr Islamist coalition, and Mahmoud Jibril, the leader of so-called secular coalition, the National Forces Alliance, NFA. Judging by Mahmoud Jibril’s statements, NFA allegedly supports the new Libyan government in Tobruk.

The Algerian party is reported to have been the initiator of the meeting which had been arranged to facilitate a negotiated compromise between the leaders of various Libyan groups. Since September 2014, the Algerian authorities have been looking for opportunities to establish contacts between the former Gaddafi supporters and moderate Islamists. Noteworthy is the fact that in the early 2000’s Ali Sallabi and Mahmoud Jibril were putting lots of effort to have the Islamists included in the Libyan government. As we know, this process had been governed by Seim al-Islam, the son of Muammar Gaddafi.

The fact of meeting itself is interesting because Mahmoud Jibril, besides everything else, is one of the leaders of the Warfalla tribal group considered to be one of the largest and most influential tribal groups in Tripolitania. It stands high with Algeria who sees Warfalla tribe as a protective shield against the Islamists who established their base in Tripoli. The Warfalla still retain neutrality in the inter-Libyan armed confrontation. Western experts believe the outcome of this confrontation depends mainly on the position of the tribe’s leaders.

The meeting between the two leaders was preceded by a series of consultations between Mahmoud Jibril and Mustapha Nouh, the Islamist deputy intelligence chief. Seemingly, conditions of a possible compromise were discussed.

The possibility of Ali Sallabi’s trip to Algeria was most likely discussed by the Islamist leaders in Tripoli and the trip was probably authorized by their military leader, Abdelhakim Belhadj.

By conducting such consultations in its territory, Algeria is trying to seize the initiative from Egypt to resolve the crisis in Libya. Apparently, Cairo is regarding the meeting in Algeria as an attempt to neutralize their protégé – a retired Libyan General, Khalifa Haftar, leading, according to the Syrian information agency SANA, the operations of Al-Karama in elimination of terrorists in Libya. The Egyptians, as a retaliatory move, are ready to release Ahmed Kaddafedam, the leader of Gaddafi-supporters, to have him conduct negotiations with moderate Islamists under the control of Egyptian party.

On December 7, 2014 newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, with reference to an unnamed member of the Government of Abdullah Al-Thani, spread the message that the Libyan government located in Tobruk intends to appoint General Khalifa Haftar commander in chief of the armed forces of the country. Concurrently, there were reports on the latest successes of Abdullah Al-Thani’s supporters in the fight against the Islamists near Tripoli and in the east of the country. Apparently, these steps are Cairo’s response to the meeting in Algiers. Simultaneously, this should be regarded as a signal to all major tribal groups currently maintaining neutrality, including the Warfalla, that it is time to determine which side to take.
