Meet Prince Bandar bin Sultan, ‘the hidden hand’ of chemical attack in Syria

In the Syrian conflict Saudi intelligence played a prominent role to undermine the support that today has Damascus. The last attack with chemical weapons could be a work planned for Riyadh to force an intervention in Syria.

As reported by  Dale Gavlak , correspondent for the Associated Press who interviewed many residents of Guta, chemical weapons were in the hands of the rebels and were supplied by Saudi Arabia.

Information published by ‘Mint Press News’ indicates that one of the “authors” intellectuals etching was Prince Bandar bin Sultan, one of the most influential representatives of the House of Saud and the Secretary General of the National Security Council Saudi Arabia.

As the Spanish newspaper ‘Público’ , more than a dozen rebels reported receiving their salaries regularly and Islamists Saudi Arabia Bandar familiarly known by the affectionate nickname of ‘Al Habib’, meaning ‘beloved’.

‘Bin Bandar Bush’ and Syria

For 22 years, between 1983 and 2005, Bandar bin Sultan served as Saudi Arabia’s ambassador in the U.S., and from this time remains very strong relationships with the American political class, first with the Bush family, so in some of the media is known as ‘Bandar bin Bush’.

As the daily ‘Democracy Now ‘, during his diplomatic career Bandar bin Sultan was linked to the supply of arms to the mujahideen who fought against Soviet troops in Afghanistan, the Contras in Nicaragua groups and Chechen terrorists.  According to Bob Woodward, the reporter from The Washington Post, in January 2002 the U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Vice President George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Chief of the Joint Chiefs, General Richard Myers, is gathered in the office of Cheney with Prince Bandar to discuss plans for the attack on Iraq.

What is the Saudi interests in Syria?

For countries such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia, the Arab spring offered a historic opportunity to change the disposition of forces in the region and become the leaders of the Arab world. In this context, governments who dared to make a regional and international politics relatively independent, such as Libya, Syria or Iran hindered this process and should be “trained”. A political interests are added purely economic issues related to the development of gas and oil pipelines from Qatar and Saudi Arabia on the Syrian and the inability to realize these projects under the current government of Damascus.

The attack on Syria is also determined by its relations with Iran. “The war between Israel and Iran can still be avoided, they have nothing to discuss. But war with Saudi Arabia is inevitable to clarify who plays the lead role in the Persian Gulf? Who plays the lead role in the Islamic world? The ancient war between Shiites and Sunnis, lasting more than 1,300 years, extremely aggravated. The beachhead for this war are Yemen, Lebanon, Bahasa, the eastern province of Saudi Arabia, Iraq and, finally, Syria “explains  E. Satanovsky , president of the Middle East Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Russia.

Military capability Syrian Army forces them to choose means “unconventional” to achieve their interests, such as financial and military support to armed groups opposed to the legitimate government.

The interests of Saudi Arabia in the Syrian conflict are synchronized with the U.S. and Qatar in the region, and for these countries the removal of Bashar al Assad is an undisputed issue. The change in leadership in Syria will mean the fall of the last government was secular in the Middle East after the Arab Spring, and the automatic expansion of Saudi influence in this country, as had happened with Oman. According to the logic of Bandar bin Sultan, Riyadh expects to fully control the next government in Damascus, “because with money buys everything”.
